Raven Visits Antigua
We went to Antigua in early November and had a great time there. The feel was less developed and touristy than Bermuda and we stayed in a big new house in a local part of town where most tourists don’t stay, down ‘Old Road.’ We got some weird expressions when people asked where we were staying and we said down ‘Old Road.’ It was actually a great spot and had several nice beaches nearby. The city of St John’s was super busy, with crazy traffic and we pretty much avoided it. We pretty much explored the whole island during our time and liked Pigeon Point/English Harbor area and did a couple hikes over there. We also liked Long Bay Beach on the east side and Deep Bay Beach on Northwest sides of the island was a favorite as well. Overlooking the beach is Fort Barrington a quick hike up a hill gave way to spectacular views of the bay. The beach was super calm and kids enjoyed swimming there. We visited a bunch of beaches on the west side of the island near our house, Darkwood was nice, although pretty close to the road and we also like Freyes. Snorkeling wasn’t great, we tried a few spots, but didn’t see a whole lot besides a few fish, the water was generally pretty murky. Just after we arrived a huge storm hit, the worst in decades and it poured so hard a big part of our road washed away. The first day we managed a short trip to Darkwood before it started raining and then it rained pretty much nonstop for a couple of days. Our house had a metal roof so it was quite loud listening to the rain. The kids did well, Darwin really enjoyed swimming, it was great to see how comfortable he felt in the water. Jesse did good considering, but we tended to leave late, had relatively short days out, and went to bed early so I could try to get some sleep since he woke up to feed so many times during the night. Jesse started walking when were in Antigua, a big milestone for him. For the last five days of the trip, we moved to another house nearby by right on the ocean, the views were great but the house was much older and dated. Our original plan was to spend time in the Turks and Caicos but all of the flight between the islands got cancelled so we decided just to stay in Antigua which worked out.
