Crested Butte- Off the Beaten Track Gem
In September we visited Crested Butte. It’s kind of out of the way, but a beautiful town in Colorado in the Elk Mountains surrounded by some of the best hiking and mountain biking we’ve experienced. The abundance of trails within a short drive is really cool and was nice with the kids. We had a bluebird day of hiking and then the winds must have changed blowing smoke from nearby fires into the area and it was hazy the next day. On the day we left a storm blew in and we got one last hike in that morning which turned out to be a mistake, we got stuck trying to get home as they closed Monarch Pass and what should have been 5 hours turned into a 10 hour drive after sitting stopped in traffic for hours in white out conditions and rerouting to get home late at night. We made it home tired more from the long day of driving. The trip back was a bummer, but Crested Butte was really neat and we want to get back and do more exploring.
